Anthony Scott (Coraline, Corpse Bride, Paranorman) and K Ishibashi (Kishi Bashi) had always talked about making a stop motion music video together. Anthony being between movies and K being between tours (and Mocha being married to K), they embarked on a ambitious bi-coastal production. Using Mocha’s vivid illustrations and off-kilter storytelling ability, they created an organic and surreal world. Although originally intended for the song “People of the Mountain, People of the Ocean”, an acoustic Jupiter One song (K and Mocha’s old band), the film found it’s home around the song “I Am the Antichrist to You”, a haunting song about love off of Kishi Bashi’s debut album, 151a.

About Anthony:
Anthony is a 20 year veteran of stop motion animation. Having gotten his start in Gumby, he went on animate in Nightmare Before Christmas, and then became the supervising animator in both Corpse Bride and Coraline. He also created www.stopmotionanimation.com, a stop motion website dedicated to the art of filming all things moving that really shouldn’t really be moving.
www.StopMotionAnimation.com.

About K and Mocha:
K and Mocha began in Jupiter One, a NYC based synth rock band. Subsequently K now records under the pseudonym, Kishi Bashi. K met Anthony when he sent him this music video
that he had created.

I built a more complex wave rig for this shot, dubbed the Wavatron2. Here is a photo of the setup during the first test I shot yesterday. I am preparing to shoot the final shot tomorrow. K is arriving tonight with the final artwork for this and several other shots.

LumberFlex gets an upgrade!

I was never completely satisfied with the original 1/2” threaded rod configuration to raise and lower the boom on the rig. It worked for the first shot, but since I need to depend on this rig for the duration of the shoot, I began to look for a better way. So today, I attached a heavy duty model mover to the column, which made a big difference! (Thanks T.H.) Next, I am shooting the last shot of the video, Shot 44, which needs a boom and tilt. It also requires a new wave rig, which I am assembling today. K arrives on Sunday to work on a few shots. Stay tuned for more updates. -anthony

Animating Shot 05

Animating Shot 05

Here’s the beginning of the video, as the puppy flashes...

Shots 2-3

Shots 4 'n 5

Here’s the beginning of the video, as the puppy flashes back to better times.

After much deliberation this weekend, Mocha and I finally came...

After much deliberation this weekend, Mocha and I finally came up with a look for the flash backs.
